Stats to spur education on your path to AI
This morning I spoke to the #RISK AI Digital conference about the urgent need for employee education, training, policies, guidelines and guardrails.
As a part of my presentation I gathered a ton of statistics (and presented just a few of them due to time).
I thought it might be interesting to share the larger list here, as we all plot safer paths to the future using AI. (Plus, I love stats!)
Policies trail usage:
Only 21% of companies reporting AI adoption have established policies governing employees’ use of gen AI technologies, according to McKinsey
56% of workers are using generative AI tools for work tasks, according to the Conference Board
71% of workers say their managers or organizations are aware of their usage, increasing the organizations’ legal challenges, ibid
74% of workers say their organizations don't have a general policy related to the use of generative AI at work, are still developing one, or simply don’t know, ibid
Global Salesforce Study of 14,000 users:
55% have used unapproved generative AI tools at work globally (find country-specific stats and more here)
46% of generative AI users have used banned AI tools at work
69% of users have never received or completed any training on using generative AI tools
71% of users have never received or completed training on using AI safely
69% of users have never received or completed training on using AI ethically
39% global workers say their employer doesn’t hold a strong opinion about generative AI use in the workplace
37% said their employer has no policies around generative AI at work
27% said they had no idea of policies around using generative AI at work
21% have clearly defined policies around using generative AI at work
15% said their employer had loosely defined policies around using generative AI at work
And half of global workers surveyed — regardless of whether they use generative AI or not — said proficiency in generative AI will result in:
51% Increased job satisfaction
47% Being sought after in the workplace
44% Being paid more than those who don’t become proficient
Digital and AI literacy compound value, according to McKinsey
Companies that have leading digital and AI capabilities outperform laggards by two to six times on total shareholder returns (TSR) across every sector analyzed, McKinsey Research
Spreads in digital and AI maturity between leaders and laggards are substantial and growing within every sector
The average spread of digital and AI maturity scores between the top and bottom performers has jumped 60% between the two periods studied (from 2016-19 vs. 2020-22)
AI-enabled tools abound, and companies have a LOT of them
67% of SaaS companies now offer AI within their products according to a panintelligence report
The average company uses a ton of applications, according to Zylo’s SaaS Management Index:
162 for companies with 1-500 employees (and 67% w/ AI embedded would be 109)
245 for those with 501-2,500 employees (and 67% w/ AI embedded would be 164)
355 for those with 2,501-5,000 employees (67% w/ AI embedded would be 238)
293 for those with 5,001-10,000 employees (67% w/ AI embedded would be 196)
650 for those with 501-2,500 employees, on average (67% w/ AI embedded would be 436)
These numbers alone should give anyone pause, right? But (once again), to quote Dr. Seuss:
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”
